How to Prevent Yourself From Turning Into a Sasaeng

If you don’t already know what a Sasaeng is, it is a fan who will go to any extreme to see the idols they love and act out to show their appreciation for idols. The last thing the k-pop world needs is more sasaengs. So, in order to not fall into being a sasaeng yourself, here is some advice.

1. Think before you act. Its called Self discipline. Naturally, I’m sure all of us fans would love to run up to our favorite artists and hug ’em to death, but thats not exactly acceptable, now is it? There are boundaries. Extra excited fans go way past such boundaries with their impulsive actions. Before considering their surroundings, the star, or any other variables, they act. The first step to not becoming a sasaeng is controlling the excitement that causes spontaneity.

2. Consider yourself. By using all of your time and money hunting down your favorite stars, your wasting your own life. Considering many sasaengs are girls in their teens, it is an important part of life that is being wasted. Its when you should be attempting to score well on tests in order to be accepted to the college of your choice or making a decision on what career you want. Ignoring such factors doesn’t usually lead to great outcomes. You owe it to yourself to make a life for you, instead of following around the life of your favorite artist.

3. Don’t try to meet them outside of official events UNLESS its really by coincidence. Idols surely don’t appreciate those fans who cause road accidents in an attempt to chase them down. If it was a rare occurence, maybe it wouldn’t be such a problem, but there is actually such a thing as “sasaeng taxis”. These taxis wait outside of concert halls, broadcast stations, and even group dorms to help the many sasaeng fans who are out to chase and stalk. This just isn’t the right way to meet artists. The situation would be different however if a fan coincidentally came across an idol on the street and wanted to greet them. That would be completely acceptable considering thats the kind of popularity idols expect when they first sign contracts. Going out of your way by traveling distances to greet them is when your crossing into sasaeng territory.

4. Don’t give presents that contain ANY of your bodily fluids. Why write something in blood when you have markers for that? It doesn’t show your extra passion for artists, but rather frightens them. Last time I checked, fans are supposed to support their idols, not traumatize them. So sure, you’ll stand out from some of the other fans, but it won’t be in a good light. Offering normal presents will only give the idol a better impression of you. If every fan did this, maybe idols wouldn’t be so scared of their fans.

5. Remember they are people too. Although many times idols almost seem unreal to us, the truth is — their human too. The average person would be bewildered if swarms of people approached them in an attempt to just touch one hair on their body. Stars may be used to and expect such actions, but it doesn’t mean they don’t feel any intimidation. Especially younger, rookie idols. As people we admire, idols should be treated with at least a little more grace — as people, not objects. Would you want to be accidentally trampled and suffer injuries because your fans are trying to express their love?

Then again, if your as lucky as Eunji from Reply 1997, you can be a crazy sasaeng and everything will work out well for you anyway. You even get Seo In Guk as a husband.

Hold on, I’m reconsidering this whole situation now.

Try at your own risk.
